hi,

I had a server crash today.
it's back up now but I was wonddering if someone could shed some light on
what happened.

I'm not sure what cause the crash.

You could ping it but none of the network services were responding: http,
ftp , ssh (this was the killer for me because I control it remotely)

couldn't log in from the console so I killed the power.

When it came up my raid partition SWAP was screwed up and I had to restart
the swap device and reboot.

it's back up and running.

here's some of the things that might have triggered it - don't know.

1. right before I had adjusted a user's crontab in vi - I might have srewed
up the syntax or done something wierd in vi by accident

2. the DNS server - on another box - crashed.

3. it had been getting lots of web traffic.

where do I start looking for causes?

thanks,
Gavin
