This annoys me so much too, the menus themselves are ordered haphazardly and the
automatic restoration 'forces' you into a fixed menu structure if you don't
know how to disable it. To disable it as far as I know it's simply a matter of
running:  'mv /usr/bin/update-menus /usr/bin/_update-menus'. That way you can
always restore it if you need it but I doubt that I ever will. Mandrake RPMs
run a post-install script that says if the /usr/bin/update-menus file exists,
run it.

I hear ya there! KDE2's Kmenuedit is very much improved over the KDE1 equivalent
but it's still no substitute for being able to right click and edit a menu or
simply drag and drop menus.
