Though I have not a Toshiba laptop, I experienced an installation on a Toshiba satellite pro 4300, and noticed a problem that could be similar to yours. It was caused by the lack of support of the toshiba graphic card (S3 savage IX, or sort of). The XFree site claims it is works under XFree3.3.6, but it is not true. It simply recognize it but has no driver at all. The problem was solved using a patch for Xfree.
