Some days ago I posted a message asking for an advice about the
compatibility of linux mandrake with a NEC laptop.

Well, I finally bought it and installed Mandrake 7.1. The machine
specifications are: a PIII500 with 128MB of RAM, 12GB HD, 14" XGA
screen, an ATI rage mobility graphic card with 4MB RAM and a yamaha
chipset YMF-752.

I have to say that Mandrake behaved quite well, in fact I had no problem
during the installation except for the detection of only 65MB of RAM
instead of the physical 128. I hoped that putting explicitely the correct
amount of RAM into the specific textbox during the installation would had
ruled the problem out, but it didn't.

Both the graphic and the sound cards were detected and configured
correctly (maybe the latter is not perfectly configured, but it works),
but the RAM still is 65MB, according to Mandrake.

I'm afraid this could depend on the fact that only the first 64 megs are
original Nec, while the other, though compatible, are not. Any idea round
there?

I'd like to post the report of this installation on the linux websites
devoted to laptops, but I'd prefer to look deeper into this problem
before.

Thanks in advance
