Well, I finally bought it and installed Mandrake 7.1. The machine
 specifications are: a PIII500 with 128MB of RAM, 12GB HD, 14" XGA
screen, an ATI rage mobility graphic card with 4MB RAM and a yamaha
 chipset YMF-752.

I have to say that Mandrake behaved quite well, in fact I had no problem
during the installation except for the detection of only 65MB of RAM
instead of the physical 128. I hoped that putting explicitely the correct
amount of RAM into the specific textbox during the installation would had
ruled the problem out, but it didn't. >>
