Even I can continue working, but I usually reboot the systems to make it reload the new glibc and not work with the old cached in memory by ld.so. Your problem probably comes from some dependency of glibc (try locales...). Perhaps you are moving from libc5 to libc6; install also the libc5-compat packages before reboot, to be able to run any old executable.
