I'd say, if this is considerably less than 320, then...

Some video cards, I believe AGP cards, take up various amounts of main
memory for their own purposes, and free will report the amount of memory
left over after the video card has done its thing.

If free reports 300 MB, I'd look at my video card. If it reports 64 MB,
I'd look elsewhere.
