pop-3 is how you retrieve your mail from a server. "on demand" is fine for this and isn't causing your problem. You provide so little information about what you are trying to do, I doubt anyone will be able to help you. What is the mail server named? Are you using sendmail, postfix, etc.? What is the machine name of your mail clients (the one that worked and the one that didn't)? Show us your DNS entries, particulary the MX record.
