Ok. I just reinstalled in expert mode, and made sure that hard drive 
optimizations were turned off. I also choose xfree 3.3.6 and told it not to 
boot into X.

Now everything comes up fine, and I'm a happy camper. Too bad that problem 
wasn't caught with the cooker series, though.
