Some more info on this problem:

1) I am now running Mandrake 7.2. The changes I tried to make involve a
custom icon and a different background. These changes worked under 7.1

2) I was running Login Manager as root.

3) Responses to my earlier post that I have received direct to me indicate
that I am not the only one trying to solve this. Either others have made the
same error as me, or this is a bug in 7.2

4) the kdmrc file has permissions rw-r--r-- under 7.1 and also initially
under 7.2, but after using Login Manager these change to rw-------

5) Restoring an original copy of kdmrc (from another machine) puts the login
screen back the way it used to be.

6) I can't change the greeting font either.

7) Although the default Mandrake settings specify a graduated background, I
just get a plain blue one (on both machines).

My machine is running a nVidia vanta video card and the XFree 3.3.6 SVGA
server with experimental 3d support. The other machine is a laptop running
the patched SVGA server for S3 Savage video (downloaded after install).

Can someone tell me if doing this with Login Manager actually works on their
7.2 system? (or has everyone got the same problem?)

Thanks

Trevor.
