personally i would need to know more about the machine.. ram, hd, nic's...

all in all, anything on a 486 will be slow compared to a 166mmx setup, but still it will work and network functions (if installed properly) will barely notice any difference.

I wouldn't do it with less than 64 megs ram, and would also suggest a Expert/Expert install -- basicly stripping it down of everything that it installs basic.  I have got my installs down to a 500 meg installation (with fluff of course) so the hard drive reaally doesn't need to be too large.

Subject: [expert] 486 DX?

Hello all,  I have an old 486 DX that hasn't been a part of my network, mainly because I always considered it to slow for practical use.

I'm thinking about installing Linux and using it as a workhorse: proxy, ftp/web/news server, and it will need to share drives with a NT (gag) network.

Am I expecting too much?  Will it be super slow?  Any advice on how to make it as fast as possible?

Thanks!
