I'm using a 486dx2-66 at work to provide DHCP services, share a modem, cache DNS, monitor network traffic, share 2 printers and some disk space so some Win NT & 98 machines can all function together. It only has 16MB ram, but still functions just fine. Gets a bit slow if too many big documents with too much graphics hits it at once, but otherwise no complaints. Just make sure you only install what you need (ie no X!, etc) Trevor On Friday 08 December 2000 03:13, you wrote: > > Hello all, I have an old 486 DX that hasn't been a part of my network, > mainly because I always considered it to slow for practical use. > > I'm thinking about installing Linux and using it as a workhorse: proxy, > ftp/web/news server, and it will need to share drives with a NT (gag) > network. > > Am I expecting too much?
