Because of some other errors previously with other apps, setup, etc, I couldn't be certain that what was in my .xsession-errors really applied to MandrakeUpdate so I deleted the file and recreated it (touch .xsession-errors) and THEN tried running MandrakeUpdate again as a user and then as superuser. As a user, I get the dialog box asking if I want to run it unpriviledged or login as root. Either way, it flashes and crashes. As root, trying to run it flashes and crashes. In neither case is anything entered in .xsession-errors, so I must conclude that none of the previous messages in the file related to MandrakeUpdate. praedor -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain
