Well, I gave it a try, set up the machine as follows
SDA 4.3 GB / and swap
SDB 2.1 GB /home
SDC 4.3 GB /home/data
SDD 2.1 GB /backup
SDE 2.1 GB /home/data/mp3
SDF CDROM /mnt/cdrom

booted with the bootable CD in the CD-ROM drive after disabling all IDE
drivers

Poof. Detected a bootable CD in the CD-ROM drive and booted to it with no
problems. I haven't finished doing all the updates I need yet, nor have I
installed all the drivers I require, but so far, I can't complain one
bit. It seems to run quite stable.

One thing that I was wondering about is whether or not there are some apps
similar to hdparm for SCSI drives. This runs fairly fast as ReiserFS, but
I'm almost certain it could run much faster.

As for a CD-R/RW drive. I haven't got enough power in that power supply
to handle another device, nor do I have any bays to put it. Besides, I do
most of my vacking up to /backup, which I then duplicate on my server at
home.

Thanks
