Oh - wait! I got so involved in the VOIP thingy I forgot all about this!

Sorry!

lets see - if you want to run one or more x clients THROUGH a telnet
session, use ssh. It works like this:

the SSH program can 'forward' x connections back to the
machine from which you ran it. So, if I'm sitting at
'here' and I ssh to 'there', ssh can/will-if-configured-right-
and-is-allowed-to-by-'there' export DISPLAY to look like
        something approximating: there.somewhere.com:10.0, which
is tunneled (encrypted too, I might add) back to 'here:0.0'
(or whereever you have your 'DISPLAY' set on 'here'
when you ssh'd 'there'). (There - was that confusing
        enough? ;-)

the end result (executive summary time ;-): you ssh to 'there',
then you can start x client programs like xterm and xclock
and xemacs and they will display on 'here' just like they
        were local.

(Yet another reason for using 'ssh'! ;-)

If, on the other hand, what you want to run the entire desktop on
'there' and have it display 'here', then you want something like
'vnc', which basically puts a 'desktop server' (for lack of a better
term!) on 'there' which ANY (permitted) client can connect to and
get a desktop from (one desktop per server process, passwords can
be required if desired, it is supposed to be possible to share
desktops but I've never tried, void where prohibited ;-). The
'gotten' desktop will display inside an x window, and have
an entire desktop (with windows!) inside it.

There are probably other possibilities for what is really
being asked for, but I think I'll leave it there and see if
I've hit it yet...

(things like running a IP tunnel across, stuff like that)
