[expert] sound - playing music cds

Since sound worked for me (ESS-solo card) automagically on 7.2 installation 
and I get lots of system sounds from XFCE, KDE, etc., I never thought twice 
about it.  

When I put in a music CD and select one of the various players, the CD spins, 
but there is no sound.  

What's the trick?
