I love replying to this question because it drove me crazy for the longest 
time... :-)

Is your CD drive connected with an audio cable to your sound card? This is 
usually the reason why you get system sounds but no CD playback sound.

Most CD players ship with a cable (even if it's not connected), but if you 
don't have one they're only a couple of bucks from a PC dealer -- and (I 
think) there's only one type to chose from so you don't have to worry about 
getting the right connector.
