I have a very similar system. Cable Modem/LM7.2/Samba/Win9X boxes
My windows boxes use DHCP from my Linux box as well. I think what would
really help your situation is to set up a 'caching only' DNS on your
Linux box to all local name resolution could take place without an
unintended trip to your ISP's DNS. I am not certain if that is your
performance problem, but my system work great and I don't suffer any
performance problems (operator problems on occasion)
