Also sometimes the process may be hung up on hardware.  Usually
you can get them to die by kill -9 - but I've seen times when
even that does not seem to work....  I'll have to try
the stuff Civileme suggests next time this happens to me ;-)

(killall5? never heard of that command.  Time to dig again ;-)

(Besides, I thought 9 was non-catchable and non-recoverable in 
all cases... - i.e. always fatal ;-)
