Here's an update on my palm pilot woes, hopefully to prevent others from
being mislead by my post yesterday.
I have indeed had problems getting syncing to work using jpilot. However, my
tale of woe continued for some time last night. When I first started playing
with this last night, I could not get jpilot to sync, but kpilot did -
however, as I noted, it has bugs in it that made it unusable (kpilot) after
getting all the data uploaded from my palm IIIxe.
Later on last night, I tried to transfer some data to the palm (I had typed a
few todos in vi, and wanted to load them in) but could not get the connection
to work with pilot-link, which has never glitched on me before.
To make a long story short, I tried everything up to and including a hard
reset of the palm (fortuantely I had used pilot-link to back up all of my
databases earlier in the evening) without success. I tried connecting to the
palm via Windows booted onto my Linux box (I guess now I am glad I never
deleted that old windows partition) and then from a second computer that runs
Win98 - no go.
According to palm tech support, my cradle is the most likely culprit, and
they are sending me a replacement, which I won't have for 6-8 days. Until
then, of course, my palm is unusable as it is now tabula rasa after the hard
reset. Sigh. Hopefully when the new cradle arrives it will work. I am less
than convinced by the tech support person's claim that in these situations it
is always the cradle that is broken and not the palm itself. Rather, I
suspect they just replace the cradle first because that's the cheapest
approach.
Once I am (hopefully) reconnected, I will retry jpilot and post my
success/failure as a followup.
