I have been struggling with the exact same problem. I got it to work
just yesterday. I looked in /var/log/samba/XXXXX.log (XXXXX) being
the netbios name for the machine that was trying to connect) and
found an err pertaining to trying to access /root/tmp. So I changed
permissions on the /root and /tmp directorits to 777. Then it worked.
I have no idea on what this might do to any security concerns, but
for this box I don't care about security as it is behind my firewall
and this is just a home network with me as pretty much the sole
user.
Hope this helps, and somebody with some real knowledge can tell
us what's wrong under 8.0...
