Two things I found to help with this:

1) Use a less demanding Window manager when you're playing games. I've found
both Blackbox & IceWM to be lean & fast for this. Games I can't play on KDE or
Gnome work fine there.

2) I configured for XFree86 3.xx with hardware acceleration. Apparantly no
hardware acceleration for my graphics card in XFree86 4.xx. Switching to 3.xx
enabled the games again.
