Actually, I specificall avoided installing Mesa... I have an ATI Radeon 32MB
DDR video card. To get 3d opengl hardware acceleration I had to download,
build, and install the DRI-CVS code. This incorporates the required mesa
libs - and I can run gears and get > 1000 FPS (I average 1086 FPS). I also
have AC3D, an opengl 3d rendering app which works nicely.

Using the DRI-CVS code under Mandrake 7.2, I had no problems with these
games. I only ran into problems upon upgrading to 8.0 and rebuilding the
DRI-CVS. It built and installed without error (if you change your kernel you
must rebuild the DRI because it builds and replaces the kernel radeon,
voodoo, mga, etc, modules with the latest/greatest modules). I had
kernel-2.4.2 under 7.2 and have 2.4.3-20mdk under 8.0. I had XFree86-4.0.2
under 7.2 and now have XFree86-4.0.3 under 8.0. These are really the main
differences between the two versions that I was running (I had switched 7.2
to glibc2.2 and everything worked fine...including the games so this isn't
likely the problem).

Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
