Well, the following steps finally did it:
1) downloaded 2.4.4 from: http://www.kernel.org/
2) Did a bunch of makes (suggestions from a variety of folks and sources)
a) make oldconfig (keeps the old values as defaults)
b) make dep
c) make bzImage
d) make modules
3) cp the bzImage to /boot. (this file is way down in
$KERNEL_UNZIP_DIR/arch/i386/boot. It is NOT the file 'vmlinux', which is
an executable that you will find in $KERNEL_UNZIP_DIR!!!)
at this point, the docs and lotsa folks said "run /sbin/lilo". Well, I did
just that it. In fact, I did it several times, and it wasn't doing me any
good. I even tried fixing the links so that they pointed to the new image
and then running lilo. It looked like it was working, but it wasn't.
Then I received a pointer from someone to
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/#1st ie, a very polite RTFM :-)
This set of docs pointed me indirectly to the Control Center -> Boot
Config, which allowed me to point lilo to the images I wanted to use
without having to manually figure out and fix /etc/lilo.conf.
It took a couple of reboots and playing around, but the last step was
making sure that the label for the new image was "linux" and that the video
was set to 'normal'. For some reason, it seemed to take two iterations
within the configuration tool to get this to stick. It kept wanting to
leave the video on '788'. I think that the trick to be sure and exit via
the buttons and menu items, not by using the x button in the upper right of
the window.
The BTL.
1) Download and unzip/untar the source from http://www.kernel.org/
2) As a minimum do 'make' steps a-c (see above). Find the bzImage in the
i386 directory and copy it to /boot.
3) Use the control center -> Boot Config to reset lilo and write the stuff
to your boot sector.
exit, reboot, it does some more configuration during reboot,
you are in business and both the track point and a PS/2 mouse work like a
champ.
BTW: Be very, very sure that you have an emergency recovery disk before
you start!!!
