Gary,
I've had a bit of a problem upgrading through MandrakeUpdate. (It just plain
hasn't worked for me!), so I wouldn't go that route if I was you. Your best
bet is almost certainly to grab the ISO if you've got a burner, or to spring
for the CDs on the Mandrake site or one of the others online.
As far as whether you do an upgrade or a clean install, I would probably go
with a clean install., assuming that you're starting off with a
freshly-installed 7.2 anyway (i.e., there's no important data to be lost).
Alternatively, you could go for the regular Install and just tell Mandrake
not to format the drive, but I'm not sure where that leaves your system in
terms of completeness (i.e., if it leaves old files there that should really
be upgraded or replaces them).
Bottom line, as I see it, is this:
1) If you can, burn the ISO
2) If you can't burn, then buy.
3) If you can do a fresh install painlessly, do that.
4) If not, upgrade.
I've had to reinstall my machine several times after, ahem, "experimenting",
and it's always less painful to do a fresh install if you're not absolutely
*sure* there's no important data on there.
I'm on a fast connection, though, so rebuilding things like KDE from
downloaded RPMs isn't much of an issue. If you've got any upgraded stuff,
think long and hard before the fresh install.
