As I was just telling some friends - the best and safest way to upgrade
is to make a boot floppy for the previous version, do a fresh install
into a new, empty (or otherwise unused ;-) partition (on whatever
drive you wish), followed by transferring configuration you need from
the previous version, final tweaking, and then you're done.
Its probably best to organize your system such that /home is on
a separate partition - that way when its time to upgrade, you just
mount that partition on the new /home location in the new root tree
and all the user stuff is moved over.
Then, when its time to upgrade again, you just use that partition
you just upgraded FROM as the 'new, empty partition' onto which
you install your 'upgrade'. In between, you can use that space
for scratch storage or whatever ;-) (Just remember you'll want it
empty later when its time for an upgrade ;-)
