[snip problem]

Well, I'm running LM8 rather than 7.2 but...

The method I employed which I found succesful was:

   1 Make sure I had the sources available to the distro (/usr/src/linux)
   2 I installed cups-1.1.9 from source files ie over the RPM, if nothing
       else this at least puts all the source requirements for samba in place.
   3   I removed samba.common, samba.server and samba.client using the
       package manager.
   4 I installed samba-2.1.1a from source. NB samba.conf is now in a new
       location (/usr/local/samba/lib)

I can only say that this works to the extent that my linux box is now
receiving succesful log-ons from NT4 as a domain controller.
