I'd do the usual:
Check integrity of physical hardware, tightness of connections, swap in a
known good IDE cable if problem persists after this check.
Boot in rescue mode and use fsck and badblocks on the disk. Backup any
critical data while you're at it.
Re-boot and see if the problem stil exists. If so, try the drive on another
known working computer. Still same error? Then it's _likely_ the hardware.
See if the drive manufacturer (like Maxtor) offers a DOS-bootable test
utility for the drive and check it out.
