yeah, I know I could probably get this winmodem working in linux,, and I plan to try one of these days..
but like I said, there are reasons, and applications that I use now, and I don't presently have time to look for linux alternatives or to learn how to use those alternatives productively. This win2000 notebook has around 50 apps loaded for many tasks,, and I use it to create Nt/2000 versions of the perl scripts I write for linux,, so I need to have a NT dev platform. thats just one reason, there are many more, I have a HP 3 in one printer/scanner/fax machine that only has winblows drivers that I have seen. I develop web sites to occasionally and I need to know that they work in IE as well as mozilla, netscape etc... so I need at least one winblows machine.. all my others are all running linux... but I need not justify myself, when the time comes that I don't need it, I will happily change over. The notebook will be far faster running linux I suspect, it took 288mb of ram to get it reasonable with win2000, which just 128 it was a slow dog. I will get there, time doesn't permit me to obsess about it now. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Gary Spiers Sent: Wednesday, 28 November 2001 10:41 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [expert] problem with linux I presume you are aware and have tried the linmodem drivers that now exist for a number of these winmodems. My IBM X20 works with such a Linmodem driver. WRT Windows applications, my employer is a major aerospace R&D house. On the research side Linux is being used an increasing amount especially for numerical (beowolf clusters) and experiment control applications but on the flight (spaceflight) side of the house Windows and commercial apps are well entrenched. Key applications not yet available for Linux from my personal need perspective include project management tools, CAD (we use SolidWorks) and optics design (Zemax and GLAD). I can `back of the envelope' a lot of the optical design using self built libraries running under Maple on Linux or using traditional programs I have written but the large integrated pacakges needed for the detailed finish work are missing currently. Oh and my employer does have a large projection wall with real time rendering and no I don't think anyone has used it for Doom yet :-) GaryS > Thats definately a pipe dream.. the point is this, right now, some of us > need windows for specific purposes. > > I don't want to dick around with PCMCIA and modem cards to match when my > notebook has a built in MiniPCI winmodem.. > so I use windows on it.. so that when I am away from the offices, I can get > my mail and browse..
