Don't do that, you will only hurt yourself.. We used to sell motherboards at the manufacturer where I worked, we had one for Cyrix 686 200+ CPU's and on that mainboard, the performance was equiv to a P120,(I think the chipset was based on an Apollo pro) but on a VX chipset the Cyrix686 killed the P200 hands down.. no contest at all.
I have had many intel chips, and many cyrix, nextGen and AMD chips, the tide is definetaly turned in favour of AMD chips, its very likely your mainboard that is making the AMD slower. I have an AthlonXP1800 and it rocks, try 2700 Bogomips, (might have been more, can't remember) but anyway, its lightning fast.. Incidently, that elcheapo mainboard for the Cyrix chips sold like hotcakes (to computer manufacturers), not because it was good, but because it was cheap. Its not the brand of mainboard that matters, its the chipset, timings ect.. rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Dennis Myhand Sent: Saturday, 1 December 2001 10:24 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] 8.1 Piece of Crap! Just for some added info, I have Mandrake 8.0 loaded on an FIC 503+, 256 megs ram, AMD k6-2 333MHz, and I also have Mandrake 8.0 loaded on an old, Pentium MMX 166MHz, 96 megs of ram, and the cheapest MoBo that NEC could find. The Pentium machine is at least TWICE as fast as the AMD box, no matter what OS it is running. That goes for Win98, W2K, NT4.0, Solaris 8, and Mandrake Linux. My little network test field has been a real eye opener to me. I will go with Intel chips from now on. The part that is slower is the boot. record boot is 9.5 minutes from Lilo to login. Then once I log in and get the first program started.... another delay. It rocks. Only real problem so far is that a number of rpms were bad (not corrupt but bad builds) most notably when it comes to autofs and amd otherwise it's not running any slower than normal. > > James > > Ps....
