Think of mandrake as red hat on steriods..

we use mandrake for everything from web servers, dns servers, proxy servers,
and mail servers, and the latter is done with virus scanning of all email
going in and out and fairly interesting spam removal stuff...

We used Redhat before, but mandrake consistantly has newer packages, and I
have never had a problem modifying it to suit our needs.. we don't have alot
of IT guys here, but we all know our way around mandrake and have yet to
find a problem we couldn't fix..

As for the desktop, I am trying to convince the "bean counters" to try it on
desktops but nothing thus far, we have to show that productivity would not
be effected as it relates to communication software and stuff like that.
We'll get there though, when win98 gets so old that its not usable (lets not
start and arguement on if its usuable now) and they are forced to consider
XP or die... then I think mandrake will become the desktop of choice...

We are going to start a couple of new people on mandrake and see how long it
takes them to pick it up..

Also want to try getting Evolution setup with our systems..

I was actually toying with the idea of a mandrake "dumb terminal" setup,,,
couple of big mother servers, and alot of essentially dumb PC's using x
forwarding or similiar.. but haven't even done trials on that yet..

In your case, if it was a choice between Red Hat and Mandrake, I'd probably
go the later... unless there is some reason you need redhat??? They are
much the same in many ways, so its not a big leap... and I don't understand
what your problems customising mandrake have been in the past??

Subject: [expert] Mandrake in the enterprise

Hi everyone-

I really respect the opinions of those on the list, so I will ask the
million dollar question. Do you think Mandrake is ready for the
Enterprise? I work for a large company in the US that is considering
Linux for not only the servers, but the desktop in the future. They have
been experimenting with Red Hat mostly and our experience with Mandrake is
it is great first time around, but when we go to customize the machine we
run into problems.

Being the one who influences this decision, I want to hear from other
Mandrake users in the corporate world. Are you using it on an enterprise
level?

thanks in advance.......

-Scott
