Scott, Numbers may help in this area also. If you go to http://www.cyber.com.au/ on the right hand side of the main page you will see an article titled linux vs windows price comparison. A fairly comprehensive pdf that details the costs in both initial switch from windows to linux, as well as the down the road costs of both systems. Second is an article from theregister at http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23436.html Which does a rather unscientific but well documneted comparison of the installs of Mandrake 8.1 RedHat and SuSe 7.2 and WinXP (some things only Mandrake could handle by the way).
Finally mention to them that from a users standpoint the OS will already be installed (I'm assuming that they would want the IT staff to do the installs instead of the office personel.) This is important, as my wife once mentioned that she didn't know how to use linux..... as she was typing a letter in Korean to her sister in GNotePad on my linux box..... *grin* I'm often amazed by how many people I can send into total panic attacks when I put the KDE theme on a windows box they use. They can't find anything, then swear that linux is too difficult. One guy even asked "How do you make that linux box say Windows 98 when it boots?" My point here is that the "hype" of difficulty surronding linux rarely is matched by how easy/difficult it is to use. Most people perceive windows as easier because it came on the box they bought. My answer to them is that I give them an IP number netmask and gateway (DNS too) and tell them to configure a windows box. Even talking them through it and then showing them the config options in linux without talking them through it, they come out a believer that linux is easier.
