Now that I've noticed that you said it's a new box it might not be that the drives have been over worked. ie some of the testing I do involves installing and re-installing complete "localized distro's" from scratch. I've found that after 8 or 9 installs always with the same partition size (the local version does auto partioning the same size every time) I get the equivilant of noise on the drive and need to be repartioned once to another a differnt config. One point of notice. I've had trouble with Aopen 56x and 52x drives even with a number of Winders CD's (Photoshop was one Win98SE was the other) that worked fine on the 40x drives we had. If you've got an older or non Aopen CD drive around I'd switch it for the install. They seem to work nicely once the os is up and running.
