Hmm.  I've always used 'reboot' or 'halt' from the (root) command line
until recently (when I noticed that the gui lets you shutdown also).

So, try 'halt' or 'reboot' from the root prompt.

If you want a delay, then you'll probably want a little script or something...

Of course, someone soon will explain why shutdown does not work like its
'supposed' to ;-)
