Forgot something else.  If you have another system you can log in from, and 
it is USB, you don't have to restart X.  You can run /ettc/rc.d/init.d/usb 
restart and it will restore functionality (I think if you are in the GUI you 
will still have to go to a text screen and switch through, but the keyboard 
will come back).  This also works if you are in text mode and the keyboard 
mouse stops working.  I think it is the version of X, or the kernel, because 
my SuSE box works fine.
