I put together some notes a while back for Mandrake 7,2 and 8.0: http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/dualboot.html /home and swap can be shared partitions. You'll need to keep the users and groups in sync for this to be effective. If they are not synced then a user might be able to log in but not own their home directory. Swap should be picked up automatically. You can probably get away with a shared /tmp, but this could possibly cause some problems in bizarre situations (/tmp cannot mount, some proggies will complain). If you use lilo to boot, try to keep the versions in sync. This allows you to make changes from either version of the OS. If your 8.0 install is not mounting system partitions from your hdd then you should be able to test without causing damage.
