I had no problem with putting the "nomount" in lilo.conf either; whenever I 
was taking devfs online and offline for various reasons. A kernel recompile 
is unecessary as far as disabling devfs is concerned.

I haven't had any problems with devfs as of yet; the USB bus devices seem to 
be recognized and work OK.  Certainly everything inside the box is OK.  The 
only suggestion I can offer is that if you have the same device problem under 
both /dev filesystem types, then it may be time to start looking in other 
places for the source of the problem.
