Where are the configuration files for MySql found?

I've looked everywhere I can think of and still no joy.
Looking in /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql I found this bit of info,
"# If you want to affect other MySQL variables, you should make your changes
# in the /etc/my.cnf or other configuration files.
"
Locate doesn't find my.cnf anywhere on my system.
The problem is that I can't use webmin or phpMyAdmin or the CLI to create a
database.
I can log onto the test db but that's as far as it goes.
There has to be a global config file somewhere doesn't there??
Surley it's not gremlin powered <G>.....
