If you never set a root password, you should be able to log in as root with no pass. MySQL is very picky about syntax. Please, if you can, tell us exactly what you type when you log in. If you can, also send us a listing (select * from) your current user table. That might give us a cluse what's up. Again, though, your best bet might be to blow mysql out completely and reinstall.
