hi, my.cnf is **not** for setting up permissions like who is allowed to create/alter/update/etc tables.
if you are not allowed to alter tables, it is **very** likely that you have to "GRANT" the user you are using to connect to the database the relevant permissions: first log into the database: -----CUT------ % mysql -uroot -pTheMYSQLRootPasswordYouChose mysql -----CUT------ then tell the database who is allowed to do what: -----CUT------ GRANT INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE,....
