I use Sylpheed Claws 0.7.2 and the spell checking seems to work fine. This might be a silly question, but are you sure you have the dictionary installed that Sylpheed is looking for? My dictionary path is usr/share/pspell/ and the default dictionary is en-aspell. I also tell it to check while writing so that misspelled words appear in red and if I right click on them it gives me a list of suggestions.
