i've been reading up on some *newer* bookz ;o)

looks like you were right. it wasn't a file system limitation but a kernel one,
however it was fixed some time ago.

kernels < 2.4.0 file sizes were limited to 2 Gigabytes.
kernels >= 2.4.0 file sizes are limited to 4 Terabytes.

indeed, linux has no such thing as a 2GB file size limit anymore.
( and it never was a filesystem limit...)
