Because update-alternatives just manages the symlinks from
/etc/alternatives to the real binary that they point to. It's the job
of the system to put the appropriate link from the system binary to the
/etc/alternatives/* symlinks. Otherwise, update-alternatives would have
to know about every different possible place to look for those symlinks,
a formidable task considering that it can be used for more than just
binaries.
