While agreeing with your usability complaints about rpmdrake and its 
various sisters, since it was me that made the complaint, I would 
suggest you look again at 9.0.  I was a major crier of "Disaster!" at 
first, but that was mainly due to a defect in our troels.rsync6.2.pl 
filter which caused a handful of RPMs not to be downloaded.

Mandrake has also made some changes to the 9.0 tree.  There are at the 
moment 19 RPM updates in Mandrake's 9.0-updates tree and 17 in 
Mandrake's 9.0 unsupported tree, so things are looking much better.  I 
have 9.0 (not yet updated) in daily production and am now mighty pleased!
