I have a Toshiba camera but that is not relevant. I can have the
camera plugged in all the time and sda1 is not there. But as soon as I
switch the camera to "PC-Link" I hear the nice sound of 2 beeps which
tell me that the usb storage device is recognized. Then I mount it and
play with it.

I don't use supermount with that. I haven't tried.

Oh, and it doesn't matter whether I plug the camera in before or after
bootup.
