I had the same pb with a "cheap" AGP video card (Sis 6326): the chipset wasn't fully supported by Linux. Nice idea, I thought of it too but the problem is still there when running IceWM as well. Hardly any faster than KDE. There IS something wrong when Win 98 blows Mandrake/KDE away in a speedwar. I feel this is a genuine hardware problem or something I'm missing... Some sort of conflict somewhere perhaps, trouble with the video card...I dunno, I am out of ideas.
