I have a mandrake 9.0 distro and a colorado 300 parallel-port primax scanner; with previous distro's I always got it working with a standalone driver which has lately also become a sane driver (it uses the sane net).
This time I downloaded the sources for libieee1284, compiled and installed, and the test program when run as root (mysteriously) accesses and reads state from parport0 (mysteriouly because no parport0 exists in /dev ). With the libieee1284 installed I compiled the sane driver, and I configured everything correctly (I think !!). Xsane correctly individuates the scanner as a colorado 300 on lp0; if I telnet to the port the net driver runs on this is up and running; however if I try to get the scanner to scan or whatever it says that access to the device has been denied. Running xsane as root, suidi'ing xsane or the various driver files has no effect. My impression is that devfsd is inhibiting access to this device. Could this be the case ? I have read devfsd documentati but I haven't understood a lot about it. I would like to try creating a /dev/parport0 too, but I can't do that either. CUPS is managing a usb printer; stopping CUPS does not solve this problem. Anywhere I can find a devfsd howto for beginners ? -- Michele Alzetta
