Just for information, to answer your questions: It's Reiser FS, smaller
than 768 Megs, is the standard kernel, and I *really* need to pay more
attention to what I'm doing, when I'm trying to do something like this.
The answer, actually, was screamingly simple: Unmount /var/spool *first*.
Duh. I think maybe I need more cafine in my diet. :-)
Thanks to everyone for the information and input they provided. This
wasn't a complete wash-out for me, since I did learn some neat new tricks
about getting into single-user mode and so on, and that kind of thing can
be handy to know at certain times. :-)
