I just replaced 8.2 with 9.0, having the installer automatically do
updates at the end of the install. Used to be you could get rid of the
graphical boot and shutdown by removing "quiet" from the kernel line or
'rpm -e aurora'. That doesn't work any more.

My kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst is:

        kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 5 devfs=mount vga=788

vga=788 is supposed to give me 100x40 vc text, and does. 'rpm -qa | grep
aurora' comes up empty.

I found a usenet post that suggested running 'drakconf' at the console
would allow boot to be reconfigured. All that accomplished is writing
the same unwelcome /boot/grub/menu.lst that the installer always does,
stripping out all my customization and alternate boot configurations.

Please don't suggest I do anything that can't be done from the
console/mc. Until the basics are properly configured, I'm not interested
in GUI login.

How do I keep 788 on the consoles and get rid of the graphical
boot/shutdown?
