Y'know, if I hadn't seen this, I probaby would have written the entire affair
I'm about to describe off to Dumb Dave, a guy who sometimes frequents the
office and uses my name and moniker to impersonate me. I did the MDK upgrade,
Cups stopped working, and with it, half the printers in the office died. What
I finally did to rectify matters, as I think you said, was do a fresh upgrade
from the Mandrake servers, and reconfigure everything from scratch. 

I could be wrong, but it seems possible that there was a problem with the Cups
upgrade the last time. Of course, it also could be Dumb Dave wandering around
playing with the CAT-5 cables, too. <shrug>
